How UMT GPA and CGPA are calculated

The University of Management and Technology grades relatively. Its Undergraduate Participants' Handbook states plainly that grading is based on the norms of the relative grading system, so your letter reflects your standing against the class rather than a fixed percentage. This calculator therefore starts from the letter grade you were actually awarded.

UMT's scale has no D grades at all. It runs A+ and A (both 4.0), A- (3.7), B+ (3.3), B (3.0), B- (2.7), C+ (2.3), C (2.0), C- (1.7) and then straight to F. C- is the lowest passing grade. The handbook confirms this for engineering programmes, where passing letters are curved with A+ the highest and C- the lowest. The D cushion that most universities give you is not there.

UMT also uses .70/.30 increments rather than the HEC .67/.33, which is a second reason a generic calculator will not reproduce a UMT transcript.

The Formula

SGPA = Σ (Grade Point × Credit Hours) ÷ Σ (Credit Hours) // one semesterCGPA = Σ (Grade Point × Credit Hours) ÷ Σ (Credit Hours) // all semesters

Courses graded P (pass) or S (satisfactory) count towards degree credits but are excluded from the CGPA. An F scores 0.00 while its credit hours still count.

Worked Examples

Example 1: one semester's SGPA

A 15-credit-hour semester using UMT grade points.

Course 1, 3 CH, A (4.00)3 × 4.00 = 12.00
Course 2, 3 CH, A- (3.70)3 × 3.70 = 11.10
Course 3, 3 CH, B+ (3.30)3 × 3.30 = 9.90
Course 4, 3 CH, B (3.00)3 × 3.00 = 9.00
Course 5, 3 CH, C+ (2.30)3 × 2.30 = 6.90
Total grade points12.00 + 11.10 + 9.90 + 9.00 + 6.90 = 48.90
Total credit hours3 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 = 15
ResultSGPA = 48.90 ÷ 15 = 3.26

Example 2: the cliff below C-

A 3-credit course that falls just under the C- cut-off. At UMT there is no D to land on.

At UMT the next grade below C- is F3 × 0.00 = 0.00
Elsewhere the same course might earn a D3 × 1.00 = 3.00
Difference on a 15 CH semester3.00 ÷ 15 = 0.20
ResultSlipping below C- costs the whole course, not one grade step. The UMT pass floor is unusually strict

University of Management and Technology Grading Scale

UMT letter grades and their grade points from its Undergraduate Participants' Handbook. There is no marks column because UMT grades relatively. Note where the scale ends: C- (1.70) is the lowest passing grade and there is no D beneath it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does UMT really have no D grade?

Correct. UMT's grading table runs A+, A, A-, B+, B, B-, C+, C, C- and F. There is no D+ or D. The handbook's engineering grading section makes the consequence explicit: passing letter grades run from A+ at the top down to C- at the bottom, and anything below the minimum threshold is an F.

Are UMT's grade points .70/.30 or .67/.33?

It uses .70 and .30 steps. UMT lists A- at 3.7, B+ at 3.3, B- at 2.7, C+ at 2.3 and C- at 1.7. These are US-style steps, not the HEC values many Pakistani universities use. Add the missing D grades and a generic calculator is wrong for UMT twice over.

A+ and A are both 4.0. Does an A+ help my CGPA?

No. Both carry 4.0 grade points per credit hour and contribute identically. An A+ is recognition on the transcript for an exceptional result; the scale caps at 4.0 and nothing can push a CGPA above it.

What do P, S and NC grades do to my CGPA?

Nothing. In some courses UMT awards P for pass or S for satisfactory as the final grade. Those credits count towards completing the degree but are not used in the CGPA. NC marks a non-credit course. Leave all of them out of the calculator.

How does relative grading work for engineering courses?

The instructor sets a minimum marks threshold in consultation with the Chair of Department; anyone below it receives an F. Everyone above is ranked in descending order of merit and passing letters are assigned on a normal curve or another suitable method, with A+ highest and C- lowest. Subjects with a lab component are treated as separate independent subjects.

Does an F count towards my UMT CGPA?

Yes, and given the missing D grades it is more likely than at most universities. An F contributes 0.00 grade points while its credit hours remain in the denominator, so it lowers the average from both sides. Enter it as a normal row with its real credit hours.
